Hi my name is Cathy AKA Catherine Rutherford. I am married with two children. I was born in England and left and the age of six to immigrate to sunny South Africa. I started my education at Johannesburg Girls Preparatory School and then after a few moves., completed my high (Secondary) school education at Germiston High School.

 

Never really the studious type , I left school and went straight into working for the banking sector in the shares transfer and later the foreign exchange department doing clerical work. Just after the stock exchange crash, I went to work for a family of stockbrokers in the accounts department controlling a busy cash book and doing credit control.(This was easy as the shares were sold if not paid for within the allotted time)

 

During this time , I met and was swept off my feet my now husband and left to follow him to live up at the Sun City Hotel and Casino Resort (John was in the hotel industry). Due to my natural ability working with cash and figures, I was employed as a Casino cashier and worked my way up at Cashiering Shift Manager in the casino over a five year period. Whilst working up at Sun City, I also had a year of living in an idyllic place called Bakubung Game Lodge right in the middle of the Pilanesburg Game reserve, enjoying Africa wildlife everyday on my way to and from work.

 

Once again I followed my husband and went back to Johannesburg where, after having my daughter, teamed up with my mom to work and run a Postnet Franchise . This facility offers an office service for the small business man including from faxing, photocopying , to laminating and telephone answering service as well as typing facility.

 

After my second child, Connor, was born and keeping it all in the family, I went to work for my in-laws road surfacing company in the accounts department, again on the creditors and cash book. Whilst doing this I also assisted my husband and his partner in their catering business doing the payroll and general accounts and admin.

 

Having the casino in my blood and my children a bit older, I went back into the casino industry for a further five years in the capacity of Cashiering Shift Manager . I was very involved in the recruitment and training of staff in the new Tsogo Sun Casino , and after our big opening moved onto Caesars Casino in Kempton Park, running a shift and being responsible for vast sums of money as well as a team of employees. Whilst working at Caesars, I obtained my Business Management certificate through Wits Business School.

 

After many years in the casino industry and doing ten years of shift work we decided it was time for a change! John and I together with the children moved over to England to a pretty little village called Bishopton, just outside Darlington. I started off part- time assisting with admin support for the start up team at an enterprise company and moved into the accounts department. I also took up a college course at the Riverside College to obtain my AAT . I have now moved on and am presently working for EMS in the capacity of Office manager and I have almost completed my AAT Technician qualification- just one assignment outstanding!
